8/1/2023 0 Comments Ublock origin and ghostery![]() I haven't done any of the research because I have too many questions that depend on the content being blocked, the context that sent the request, the recent updates to both extensions and the content, and so on. I have heard arguments against running multiple anti-viruses at the same time, for what it's worth. My reasoning is that it makes me more of a moving target, and it's possible that either one will catch some content missed by the other. Which surrogate adapts the fastest? Which has the best camouflage? Does one prioritize preserving wanted functionality or disrupting unwanted functionality more than the other? Do they work properly if the other extension ends up replacing content elsewhere?įor now I'm going to use both extensions at the same time. These conflicts reflect that both extensions would flag and replace the content, which is a good sign - ideally you would want consistent redundancy so you could safely remove one - but has unclear implications, at least to me. Both appear to recognize and attempt to redirect the same resources, but choose different destinations. When I run both Ghostery and uBlock, I constantly get errors about conflicts. This kind of competitive evolution is very similar to the relationship of malware and anti-malware companies. Surrogates populated with only stubs will satisfy some dependencies, but the most popular and invasive scripts will have more revenue to protect, and more incentive to evolve in response to content blockers of all kinds. Instead, most extensions check for a known placeholder script - a surrogate - that satisfies the dependency, and redirect the request to this script. No matter what the reason, simply prohibiting content will cause the same issues as if the content organically failed to load. This can be an innocent mistake, a legitimate dependency, or an artificial one. other content and features that depend on them may fail. When a website fails to load some content - especially ads, trackers, analytics, etc. This is an explanation by a layman for another, so if anyone is more educated on the topic or these extensions' functionality, please correct me.
